Great tone comes from the hands not the gear. Despite what companies trying to sell you gear want you to believe, getting a great electric sound is not just a matter of having the right amp, effects or guitar. A really good guitarist will get a good sound on any decent gear. Someone who doesn't know how to produce great tone with their fingers will struggle to get a good sound on even the most expensive equipment. This is one of the core topics I deal with in workshops and private teaching.
Integrating Theory and Technique
You'll find vast amount of information on these two topics in teaching books and websites. What many people find difficult is knowing what's relevant to them when there's so much out there. A major problem with music theory is understanding how what you learn, can be used to actually express yourself musically. The same is true of technique. It is not clear to many guitarists how learning new technique will help them be more musical or expressive as players. Both theory and technique need to be assimilated and integrated into your the subconscious part of your brain in order for them to be used effectively, and effortlessly. Knowing how to do this is the key. This is one of the main topics I deal with in workshops and private teaching.
Optimum focus practice
Benefit more from your practice time. Every great player knows that the old adage: "You'll get more from 30 minutes of practicing the right way than 2 hours the wrong way" is not only true, but essential. This sentiment, expressed in different ways has been echoed by players down through the ages. Knowing how to get maximum benefit from practice time is an essential skill great players rely on, yet it is not something covered in most books and internet sites. This is one of the core topics I deal with in workshops and private teaching.
Playing what you hear and feel instead of mechanically running scales or uninspiring riffs is the holy grail for most guitarists and so it should be. When you can start to play what you actually hear and feel, the door to inspiration opens.
